Why Omega-3's?

Posted on 2012-05-09 08:35:54

Omega-3 fatty acids are considered ESSENTIAL fatty acids because they are necessary for human health but the body can't make them - you need to get them through food! Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, other seafood including algae and krill, some plants, and nut oils. They play a crucial role in brain function as well as normal growth and development.

Research shows that omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and may help lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer and arthritis. They also appear to be important for cognitive (brain memory and performance) and behavioural function. Symptoms of omega-3 fatty acid deficiency include fatigue, poor memory, dry skin, heart problems, mood swings or depression, and poor circulation.

It is important to have a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 in the diet. Omega-3 helps reduce inflammation, and most omega-6 tend to promote inflammation. The typical North American diet tends to contain 14-25 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids. The Mediterranean diet, on the other hand, has a healthier balance between omega-3 and omega-6, and people who follow this diet are less likely to develop heart disease. The Mediterranean diet does not include much meat (which is high in omega-6) and emphasizes foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, including whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, garlic, as well as moderate wine consumption.

If you believe your diet lacks omega-3 fatty acids, pick up a bottle of EPA-DHA at Cold Lake Chiropractic and Wellness today!

Performance Enhancing Nutrition

Posted on 2010-06-07 08:44:06

Nutrition plays an important role in our ability to perform physical activities.

No nutritional supplement or "superfood" can replace a varied, wholesome diet free of nutrient deficiencies. The ideal diet includes lots of protein for muscle repair, carbohydrates for stored energy, fruits and vegetables for vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and healthy fats to boost your immune system.

A good place to start is with the basics.  Dr. Kopala recommends our "Big 5" to fill in any gaps left by a modern diet.
1. Multi Vitamin/Mineral
2. Omega Fatty Acids (Omega 3 fish or flax oil)
3. DSF - adrenal support for low energy & high stress
4. Digestive Enzymes
5. Good Gut Bacteria (Probiotics):

Eat your Greens!

It was common for our ancient ancestors to eat up to six pounds of leaves per day. Can you imagine eating a grocery bag full of greens each and every day? Few of us even eat the minimum recommendations of 3 cups of dark green vegetables per week. And yet, these veggies deliver a bonanza of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients.

Dark green leafy vegetables are, calorie for calorie, the most concentrated source of nutrition of any food. They are a rich source of minerals; including iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium, and vitamins; including vitamins K, C, E, and many of the B vitamins. They also provide a variety of phytonutrients including beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which protect our cells from damage and our eyes from age-related problems, among many other effects. Dark green leaves even contain small amounts of Omega-3 fats.

Water, water everywhere...

Why? Because a poorly-hydrated body not only suffers from a deterioration in speed or strength, but from impaired motor skills too.  Water is the most common molecule in the human body.  Every person’s body is different, so there is no magical number for the right amount of water to drink to prevent dehydration. What’s true for everyone is that the benefits of drinking water are universal. Drinking enough water regularly helps the body function properly, optimizing physical performance and bodily functions. Not drinking enough water can lead to mild or even serious dehydration, a serious medical condition.
